Stuffed Chicken Breast
Though chicken can seem boring at times, it’s versatility can make it wonderful.  Chicken goes with so many different types of cuisines and flavors.  It’s just about putting a bit of effort into changing it up from time to time.  The supermarket had thin sliced chicken breasts on sale, so I bought some to stuff; they’re not worth the price difference otherwise.  I’ve never...

There're no ribs in those ribs
No, this is not about Taco Bell’s beef filling that only has 35% beef in it.  Recently my husband got some “boneless short ribs” also known as “Flanken short ribs” from a meat supplier.  Super tender and quite high in fat content, my husband had never used the cut before but found it’s very popular for Korean dishes.  He found a great marinade online.  We had...

Anonymous asked: I think I saw a while back that you made your own pie crust (I might be imagining that, though). Whenever I make chicken pot pie (a favorite), I buy the frozen crust and the frozen dough for the top. Do you find a big difference between store bought pie crusts and home made? Is it worth the extra time?

P.S. I really love your blog!

Another last minute meal
We got home from a friend’s house after 6 pm and I had only an hour before I had to go out.  We’d been busy since 1 that afternoon so I hadn’t considered what I was making for dinner until the moment we got in the door.  Luckily I had a full fridge (due to so much snow, I was prepared) so I knew I could come up with something.  I figured a pork loin is fairly fast to make,...

Your post about being snowed into a winter wonderland really made me feel nostalgic because I remember my own parents making me meals during grade schoo. :) So I just wanted to...

Snowed In!
This past week my kids have had a 6 days in a row without school (only 2 were actually snow days) and they’d just returned from the winter holiday break and had a snow day the week before.  In the morning I will find out if it will be 7 days in a row.  Luckily the inability to get to school has also turned our town into winter wonderland and without having to travel, the kids have had a...

Braising a Pork Roast (a learning experience)
Braised Pork Roast: Oxymoronic? Redundant?  Braise and Roast different or the same?  Braising is basically roasting so the meat is in liquid (stock, gravy, sauce, etc.). Roasting is cooking it without added liquids; just maybe an extra bit of fat (olive oil).  I had braised a pork “roast” and it was used in two different meals on two separate days.  Well, my husband informed me after...

Thank you
Just wanted to say thank you for making this blog… I am new to cooking, and have been having fun trying recipes out but sometimes I feel so uncreative and stumped when it comes to deciding what to make for dinner. I’m trying to eat a variety of foods while pregnant to “train” my little one to enjoy a wide range of tastes. This blog will serve as great inspiration, I’m...

chefmac asked: Hello Fellow Culinarian!

I’m Chef Mac, we may have spoken before, but whether we have or not I wanted to take an opportunity to emphasize my recognition of how important the Tumblr food blog community is. Tumblr strikes me as fundamentally and functionally different than any other platform I’ve found on the web. It’s much more conversational. Not to emphasize any...

Thai Red Curry
I had braised a pork roast for several hours in the oven to use half for pork tacos/burritos at my friend’s New Year’s Fiesta.   We had the other half left over so my husband and I decided to turn it into a Thai Red Curry; it’s a great quick meal.  The flavors are so wonderful, but you might have to be careful of the heat from the spices for kids.   Thai Pork Curry 1 tsp red...

A Winter's Soup
A snowy Winter’s day seems like the perfect day to make soup.  The boys were home because of a “snow day” but they would have been home anyway since they had strep throat. We were expecting 7-11 inches and got somewhere on the higher side. I had wanted to make a curried cauliflower soup for the first time but since I had less than a complete head, I figured I’d add some...

Sticky Date/Toffee Pudding
One of my all time favorite desserts is Sticky Date Pudding, AKA Sticky Toffee Pudding.  It is not really a “pudding” in the American sense of the word, but an extremely moist cake with toffee sauce.  I first tried it at Boulcott Street Bistro in Wellington, New Zealand when I worked there in the 90’s.  The owner and the chef at the time, was nice enough to fax me the recipe...

justkatethanks asked: Hi, I just wanted to say I really appreciate the message you're trying to get across through your blog. I am still, officially, a kid myself, and when I was younger I was really fussy. I think that was because when I was growing up, my parents done everything by the book, as I was their first child. I am now beginning to open up to new foods and try new things, and although I'm still not...

Quick, Quick, Quick -- Part II
Continued from Quick, Quick, Quick More recipes/ideas for quick meals: Chicken breast: unlike the dark thigh meat, chicken breast takes only minutes to cook.  It is so versatile and can be added to liquids to poach or sautéed  (browned) or baked in the oven.  I also don’t know many kids who don’t like chicken.  Again, just adding a few herbs or spices to the chicken can create a...

catlion asked: Hi! I just wanted to let you know, I really enjoy your blog and it saddens me that people seem to take offense (although your replies really do handle it wonderfully). I like using your blog as a supplement to my certainly less healthy cooking routine, with the hope that if I slowly practice some things, all the rest will come easier. Anyway, I'm sure you are getting lots of good replies too!...

Anonymous asked: I think some people are too lazy to feed there kids healthy! Its very easy to make chicken fingers, potatoes, corn & perhaps a salad. You can provide healthy without making a gourmet meal. How is it so complicated?? I know LOTS of people who work until 5, but they still have a healthy...filling meal on the table for their kids. Of course pizza night/Mc Donalds isn't out of the question,...

Anonymous asked: It really bothers me that you have such a pretentious attitude towards food. Yes, you do have some great looking stuff on here. But when people write in your ask box saying they have new food blogs and you tell them its not what you're trying to promote..? Food is meant to be enjoyed, everything in moderation. Who gives a damn if it has a bit of extra sugar or it isn't straight from an...

carols7 asked: Hi! Just wanted to commend you on getting your kids to each a variety of foods. Mine eat almost anything and will try things at least once. I make it a point to tell them it's ok not to like it as long as they try it first. For Thanksgiving, my youngest filled up on salad. And my oldest loves peas, carrots, celery, and broccoli. =)

Good job!

Quick, Quick, Quick
I am often challenged to prepare a meal quickly and healthily for my kids.  That’s because I am not the best meal planner, unlike some who write down their upcoming meals on their calendars and buy the ingredients at the beginning of the week. I do try to buy things that I will use together in many ways and figure it which way on the day.  This way of shopping is sort of like picking out...
